I do not claim to know Japanese. No, I'm not even going to say "I know a little" (that's just so wanna-be-ish). I never took a class and my knowledge of Japanese is basically limited to anime phrases here and there. I DO know that there are 3 writing systems and ONE of them happen to be called kanji, or imported Chinese Characters.
I'm Chinese, so, that gives me a little mastery over the kanji and its meanings. No, I do not know the pronunciations (that "on" "kun" stuff) and I do not claim to know anything more than just the meanings.
And since this is debate about the MEANING of Ami Mizuno's name, I think I can participate. (Ami's name is all kanji)
MIZU NO - Pun on "of water". Plain and simple.
A - The kanji means "next". When I took the time to get a better meaning, I got "rank; follow". That's pretty close eh?

MI - The kanji means "beautiful". Plain and Simple.
put it all together and you get something to the effect of:
AMi Mizu no
NextBeautyWaterField
which would THEN (because of the pronunciations already said by Creshosk) be a pun on:
NextBeautyOfWater
Evaluation: Does this make sense? Of course it does. Mercury is everyone's favorite water senshi (of water). And she WAS the next following "pretty soldier" or "beauty" after Sailor Moon.
Need more information? This site explains it well.

1)Friend of Water
SERIOUSLY. How is there any justification of this. Someone attempt to justify this because saying "Ami Mizuno" means "Friend of Water" is almost like saying "Ami Mizuno" means "The birdcrap that fell from the sky" to me. There is not even a connotation of "Ami" (the kanji) to suggest it has something to do with "friend".
The only way I could see if this would work is if the people thought "Ami" was referring to the French "ami" which I think everyone knows means "friend". BUT...Gah no! Even though Takeuchi used French in her manga...gahhh no! In fact, if it was, it would be calling Ami a guy XD (or a generic term but...). Amie would be the correct form for friend (girl) in French.
2)Network of Water
Maybe. Take a look at the site above because the site explains it for you. There MIGHT be a possible pun but...I mean its so indirect and...
Conclusion:
Friend of Water= NO
Network of Water= Maybe
Best "pun":
Next Beauty of Water
Ami really does mean "next beauty" so why argue? It might be a pun on "network" but I mean...gah...whatever. This is the most "directly" connected pun because Ami really, literally, means "next beauty". Its not even that crap where "it sounds like the words for "next beauty"...IT IS "next beauty".
