I don't know about you, but I've never seen a soul so I can't imagine how one would float I think it's much harder for a kid to grasp an abstract concept like a soul than to know what a word means. Soul implies a whole range of things, from ghosts to spirituality to inner purity to death. Ignite = burn and that's that. Ignite could also be turning a key and firing up the engine of a car. Ignite could be love that blooms up when you get to see your 'the one' again after a long time. I'm not talking about the attack names being cool, or interesting. I am not saying anything about how good they are, because honestly I prefer the Japanese names even if they are more whimsical. I am simply saying that, for an English speaker, the dub attack names are more easily deciphered. I am speaking from experience, because the first time I watched the Japanese version I was like... "huh?" None of the attack names made any sense to me, nor did I understand why they always said "make up." (Heck, I still don't know why.) And I don't know why it was omitted in the dub. See where this is going? Putting the planet name in front of every attack may seem boring, but you can't assume that every viewer has seen the show from the beginning. If you had never seen SailorMoon and happened to walk in on a later episode, you would probably have a hard time keeping straight which one was Venus and which one was Jupiter. I watched the show for months before I got them all straightened out. And it would have been a lot easier had the names of attacks and characters not changed with the changing of the language.

Yes, you can take the word and apply other figurative meanings to it. You could make it into something poetic if you wanted to. But the phrase in itself doesn't require much thought. "Fire soul" is not a complete sentence with a subject and a verb. "Mars Fire, Ignite" is. That was all I really wanted to say.
The name changes between versions had nothing to do with how easily I recognized the characters. When I first watched the dub I had never seen either version before. There was no way I could've gotten confused by the names being different from the Japanese version which I had also never seen. I just didn't know off the top of my head that the red one was Sailor Mars, and having "Mars" in all of her attacks did help drive that point home.

By far, Mars is the easiest to point out without her having to say anything, in my opinion. I mean, her main color is the color of her planet - red. The only thing on her suit that is colored that isn't red is her chest bow - purple. However, once again, "Mars Fire, Ignite" is not a complete sentence. It is a clause (a phrase that includes a subject and a verb). If ignite had an "s", it would be a complete sentence (without the comma, of course). However, it isn't a complete sentence. It's just a command. It's just like a command in Spanish, except it isn't a complete sentence. In Spanish, you would literally say, "The fire of Mars, ignite!" (¡El fuego de Marte, enciende!) or "The fire of Mars ignites" (El fuego de Marte enciende) If any of my translations are wrong, please correct me. Do those seem like complete sentences when in literal form?

According to my English teacher, a command is complete sentence with the person being spoken to implied as the subject. I was taught that "Look at this" is complete sentence, the subject is "you" (or whomever the speaker is talking to) even though it isn't stated. But maybe he was wrong or maybe I misunderstood. ^^; But in the end, it's all the same. The point is that it makes slightly more sense in English than Fire Soul.

A complete sentence has to: 1- Contain a predicate (an action) and a subject (a doer of that action). 2- Expresses a complete thought. In the phrase "Mars Fire Ignite!", Fire is the subject and Ignite is the verb. Fire is the doer of ignite, and if I'm not mistaken it does express a complete though. So 'whoever' said that "Mars Fire Ignite is not a complete sentence was WRONG. And since were talking about clauses, clauses can, technically, also be a complete sentence.

"Fire soul" is not a complete sentence with a subject and a verb. "Mars Fire, Ignite" is. That was all I really wanted to say. Just to butt in (once again, I know I'm an annoyance ), 'Fire Soul' could very well be a command as well, as 'to fire' is a valid verb in the English language. Anywayz, changing the names of attacks makes the whole dub a lot harder to understand and keep track of when you've seen the sub. What REALLY annoys me about the attack is not their names (though they do to some degree), it's the way they're spoken. In the dub, they're WHINEY! At least the sub voice put some 'soul' into the attack exclamations.

Thanks for your support TCZ, but you might want to check your own grammar before you start pointing fingers ^_~ Mars may very well be right, but the entire point is irrelevant.
I gotta give you that one, Zyppora. The dub voices are annoying x.x
And yes, I have too much time.
