Eyes Of A Child The Streets of Boston were covered with thousands of people because of the holiday season coming up. They had a wonderful time doing what had to be done, laughter and talk escaped everyone’s mouths, like every year. Hearts pounding but something else was a foot this year, something more precious then any gift ever given, that gift is of a Childs life. Its been said children are our gate ways to time our gateway to the future so our children can continue our legacy. In a matter of moments everything stopped for one particular child. Everything stopped dead and the laughter of the people haunted the area in which the sound came from. White clouds from the warm mouths of the people where the only visible thing of life from each and every person that was frozen in time. The bitter cold took everyone's warmth causing them to change what they wore, from tank tops and shorts to jump suites and jeans. But in the back of everyone's mind wasn't the fact that the homeless would be spending there holidays out in the streets, begging and pleading for something to eat. A mother cradling her child was in the back alley of a famous LA nightclub, one that was full of drunks and laughter most of the time.
A mother and a child huddled together in a cardboard box chilled by the night air, under a thin piece of black cloth large enough to be called a blanket, there shirts dirty and there cloths faded no longer showing the colors of what was there many months ago. There faces dirty and full of sorrow and pain, the club that night was full of laughter and it brought a tear to the mother’s eyes, wishing that were her life now, not for her sake but for her daughters.
The little girl close to her mother looked at 2 men that came out they looked at each other, ignoring the homeless mother and her child until one of the men left and that’s when a young man saw them, and saw the sorrow in the mothers face.
He walked very slowly towards them and knelt down seeing the Childs face, but because the child hadn’t had a reason to be scared in the past she smiled and hugged the stranger, the mother afraid pulled her back, slowly the stranger reached into his pocket and took out a hundred dollar bill and gave it to the woman, standing up and turning to leave.
“Merry Christmas.” Was all the stranger said as he slowly started to walk off, he wasn’t drunk he knew what he was doing and maybe getting into, but it was Christmas and no one deserves to have nothing, after a couple of minutes the young man was gone, out of sight but not out of mind. The mother had tears weld up in her eyes she was very happy.
She took her child into a warm place and washed her child and herself up, not spending any money on clothing because what they had was good enough, it was very warm and satisfying, instead she had her daughter look around and as she did the mother bought a locket and had the jeweler put in two pictures and wrapped it up, pocketing the box and paying for the gift which left them nothing, but to the mother it was what she wanted to do.
Every day they had begged for there weekly meal, sometimes they would get enough to feed themselves for a couple of days, but because of the holiday coming up they returned to there spot in the alley with nothing. But in the back of the mothers mind was that locket and of the stranger, someone that gave her more joy in that moment then anyone but her daughter. She was afraid her daughter would starve to death so she gave the child the last piece of bread she had and with a gentle smile the child ate it in seconds. Cradling her as she ate giving her baby warmth so if one had to freeze then she didn't want her baby to be the one to suffer. As the baby slept the mother looked into the sky taking something from her pocket, which caused her child to wake up, she smiled "Merry Christmas my little angel." She said in a very soft tone and gave her baby girl a tiny box. The child’s tiny hands opened the box and took out the locket; the mother helped her open it. She saw her mother and father in it.

Wanting her baby girl to have some kind of a Christmas she prayed hoping god would hear her cry. After she prayed, she cradled the baby and fell asleep again. The bitter enemy of the night, clamed the remaining warmth that she had and fell into a deeper sleep then normal. The woman’s breath became shallow, the man had come back to that spot and saw the woman in danger, so he called 911 and once the paramedics were there, he left knowing she was safe now. As they slept many people stopped to see what was going on, the child and mother put on two different beds and fed oxygen, the child wasn’t in danger but the mother was. She had sacrificed so much for her baby girl that she put her own life in jeopardy. To some people the homeless were bugs to be crushed, people that didn’t even exist no bodies but no souls either just space taken up. But to some people that actually cared, they hoped they would find happiness sometime in there hard life.
Time had passed and when the mother started to come around she heard a beeping sound, she was afraid to open her eyes because she felt warmth that she hadn't felt since they lost there home. Almost as if she felt a cold icy hand on her arm her heart started to beat faster but as her heart did that the beeping got faster. She didn’t know where she was, she was afraid and the beeping sound made her more confused then she had ever been before. When she opened her eyes she squinted them because of the room lights where so bright, she looked around her daughter gone, she jumped out of bed and started to take out the IV in her right forearm and tarring off the patch's to the machine that monitor her heart beat. Because she did that the peeping stopped and caused a flat line because the machine thought she was dead. People came in rushing seeing her thrashing around the room they surrounded her not sure what to do, but there were four people in white suites. "Ma'am please calm down, your safe." She stopped for a minute when she saw the four young faces, and seeing blood running down her naked arm and onto the hospital gown. In that moment her heart was the only thing she could hear, she saw the mouths moving of the four young nurses but nothing came out to her. Soon when she realized she was in a hospital, sound started to come back into the room and into her ear. "Wh. What happened, where am I?" Was all she could muster, still very weak from the days on the street and now the fear that was seen in her eyes where visible, she sat down as one of the nurses bandaged up her wound and laid her down in bed. She had tears running down her face; afraid something had happened to her daughter. She didn’t care about her own safety but that of the welfare of her first born baby. " Ma'am take a deep breath, four days ago a young man found you holding your daughter and you had fallen into a coma like state, we weren't even sure if you would make it thru the night, you almost froze to death. But as for your daughter she is all right, she has gained some weight and looking very healthy. We are surprised by the way she acts, because children that are brought up on the streets usually are more afraid of people, but she isn’t."
When she heard about the young man she started to remember something a flashback of a young man that gave her money filled her head, then died down, she looked at them having an idea who called for help and thanking god he was around the club.
The young man sat down beside her bed and looked at her with kindness that she hadn't known for a very long time and smiled asking her what her name was. The woman looked down, she didn't look very old, she looked as if she was in her early 20's with blue eyes and shoulder length black hair, and she looked up. "My name is Alexia Bennett." was all she had the strength for, she had asked about her daughter but as time passed she went to go see her. She went to a room watching her child playing with other children that where there. The joy of her daughter having fun in a warm environment was what brought a tear to her eyes and she turned away, hoping her daughter hadn't seen her, she nodded and went back into her bed but she had made a phone call to family services and asked about Melody being placed in a home where someone able would adopt her, love her for there very own. Knowing what she was doing she sighed and looked outside, watching the snow falling and hitting the window of the hospital room. She heard a knock on the door and a woman in her mid 40's in a brown dress came in, and sat down. "I'm with Social Services and we understand what you have asked us to do, but we must say its very noble of you, and we promise to find her an excellent home, just tell us about her."
The woman from social services was very nice and listened carefully as the young mother of 25 started to explain everything about her daughter down to the last hair, as she began tears weld up in her eyes. "Well ma'am Melody will be 5 next month, she is just a little angel, with green eyes and blond hair, but what gives her most joy is to laugh and sing.
Her father left me when I was 4 months pregnant with her for someone else, and we lost our home last year. I tried to give everything to Melody but she deserves a lot more then what she is getting now. I am afraid that if something happens to me, she will be alone, and I would hate for that to happen, because without me she has no one. Her father doesn’t care, and as for relatives there aren’t any. When I had married my husband my family didn’t like it and disowned me so we came out here. We are from New York originally then moved here in LA when we married.” She looked at the woman with tears in her eyes as she signed over her daughter to them and the woman nodded, leaving the room. "You can continue to see her, to write her, we will make sure she gets everything." Alexia looked up at her and smiled thanking her and the woman left. Had she done the right thing? Was it the only thing? So many questions arose in her mind but in her heart she knew she had done what had to be done, the final gift any parent can give there child.
She laid back as she contained to look outside paying no attention but knowing she couldn't pay for her hospital stay she packed up her things, got dressed and got out of the hospital right back to her cardboard home. She pulled the blanket over her body since she was alone now. Knowing that Melody was all right she fell into a deadly sleep, not knowing that would be the last night she would ever see her daughter again. Someone found her and called 911, soon she was taken to the hospital.
The hospital staff tried everything that was possible to help the mother that was now in trouble, a doctor rushed in the patches back on her chest monitoring her heart beat, but her heart beat slowly started to stop, and before Christmas night was over they pronounced her dead from starvation.
They put a blanket over her body and took her down to the morgue, because she had no money, or family she was the ward of the state and they would have to lay her to rest. With all this happing the entire hospital was very quite. The nurse’s and doctors all touched by the Christmas gift a parent gave her child, in there eyes Alexia was there hero of the night and of the year. Knowing Alexia’s child will never see her mother again, the staff that had pronounced her dead had began writing a letter knowing where the child went saying they regretted to tell everyone that she had passed away, but silently in her sleep where she can now have peace.
It was said the only thing keeping her alive was her daughter, because she should have been dead a month ago. Alexia had stayed alive only for the child not for herself, and because Alexia was alone she had no reason to live, knowing Melody would be looked after. Her body gave up, to tired to continue the journey. So her final journey was to her resting place so she could look over her child from up above.

Chapter 2
Melody was taken from the only person she had ever loved, and because she was so young she didn’t know what was happing she withdrew from everyone away from time and space, looking out the window almost like she was waiting for her mother to come and get her. She had spent her Christmas alone away from the tree not caring about anyone, not even herself. She had grown a few inches since the ordeal with being homeless and now because she was being fed probably she was at the weight she should be at.
She heard the children laughing, playing with there new toys, Melody got a toy house with a lot of stuff in it, from plastic dolls to furniture but she had ignored it completely. She wanted her mother more then anything, she wanted to be held in her mother’s arms. Every night she was heard crying, that was the only thing that made her sleep, she had to cry herself to sleep wanting so much the warm touch of her mother.
The gentle smile that was more angelic then everything to the child, but as she saw a figure in the distance she smiled and made a whimpering like sound she thought it was her mother. Soon a knock was heard at the door and an elderly woman that worked there grabbed a letter from the messenger and paid her. The young girl nodded and galloped back to where she worked.
The elderly woman wasn’t sure what it was, but she saw it was addressed to Melody Bennett, they had agreed with her mother that all letters would go to her, the woman sat down seeing the child and she read the letter to herself, the child slowly walked in and stopped mid way, her eyes full of curiosity, the woman looked at the child, when she looked into Melody’s eyes and Melody into the woman’s it was almost like she knew.
“Mommy sleeping now?” Was all the tiny child had said, her face welding up slowly with tears but not falling yet, the girl tried so hard to not cry, trying to be a big girl. Big girls didn’t cry but she couldn’t help it. The room fell silent and laughter of the other children where heard in the background, in that moment the only thing the child heard was her own heart beating.
Her Breathing slowly slowed down. The elderly woman nodded and put the letter up for safe keeping so when she was older she could read it herself. The little girl nodded and went back into the living room and sat on the window seat as she continued staring into the nothingness.
A single teardrop fell down the child’s face, she had no one in the world now, she was utterly alone and she was scared. As she looked down she had the locket her mother gave her and opened it up running her tiny fingers over the pictures as more tears fell down her face. She cried until there were no more tears left to cry out, holding the locket close to her heart she pulled away farther ignoring everything even her own hunger.
She didn’t talk, she didn’t eat and she didn’t move, she stayed in her room all day, looking outside as if she was still waiting for something, a sign that she was really dead. She didn’t want to believe the one thing left that cared about her was dead, she couldn’t bare the thought, she saw five children playing outside, they even motioned for her to come out and play with them, but she ignored them not caring.
The children saw that she had ignored there invitation to come play with them, the children tried to become friends with her but it was impossible because Melody wouldn’t have it, she would just sit and just stare into herself. The facility of the orphanage just left her alone, because everyone could see she was hurting inside. When dinner time came everyone was in the dinning room in there seats and waited for there dinner, but everyone heard a creaking sound and they turned there heads seeing little Melody, the elderly woman smiled and the children went silent.
“Im hungry.” Melody said and everyone laughed, the elderly woman took her hand and sat her down, she smiled at Melody, giving her a plate. Everyone started talking again and dinner was served, Melody taking something’s to eat and eating it within seconds, because it had been a few days she was hungry, no one paid any attention to her just allowing Melody to be herself, one kid that was named Bobby looked at her and smiled.
“Hi im Bobby, I know I speak for everyone when I say that we are happy that you are out of your room, I know what its like to lose a family member, both my parents were killed when I was 3.” He tried to comfort her because Bobby did know what it felt like because he lost twice in his life before he was even her age. His violet eyes and short blond hair lay close to his shoulders; Melody looked at him and wrapped her arms around him. The adults smiled looking at what was happing, Bobby wrapped his arms around her.

Melody smiled looking at him and continued to eat but she slowed down once she realized it wasn’t a race. When she smiled at Bobby the adults smiled happy because that was the first time they ever saw her smile. Everyone sat down and finally settled down when she began to eat again she took out the locket and put it around her neck, it hung there against her tiny chest, it was a heart shaped locket with a ruby chip in the center of it.
“After we are done, want to go and play? I can introduce you to everyone around here.” She smiled looking at Bobby and nodded, some how she had found peace. No one knew how but everything was all right now, at least for that moment. After dinner was over and Melody full she excused herself and went to her room and sat on the floor, where she began to play with her house.
Giggles were heard for the first time coming out of her room, everyone left her be for a short while, when a knock came from her door, Melody looked up and the door handle jiggled and opened, a creaking sound came from the door. “Can I play?” a small child walked in she looked like she was about 3 years of age, with brown eyes and long brown hair, Melody smiled and nodded moving over so she could sit. “My name is Katie.” She introduced herself and Melody found a friend, someone she thought she could be close to. They played for what seemed like forever and giggles came from both kids. “Ok you two its time for bed, its well past your girls bedtime.” The elderly woman helped them pick up and both girls got up, Melody stepped forward and smiled up at her. “Ma’am can Katie stay with me tonight?” The child looked at her almost with a pleading look, the woman nodded and helped them get changed into there night clothing. The woman pulled back the covers, Katie and Melody both snuggled in and close to each other, both with smiles, the elderly woman sat beside them. “You know Melody everyone calls me Mary around here, you can do the same if you like.” Mary smiled and kissed their foreheads, slowly got up turning off the lights, and headed for the door. Looking back at the children, Melody looked at her. “Goodnight Mary.” She said with an innocent smile, Mary smiled and left. Both girls fell asleep in each other’s arms, showing innocence as they slept.
When morning came Mary came in and woke them up, leaving the room to wake up the other children. Katie and Melody giggled at each other as they got up and jumped on the bed throwing pillows at each other having a major pillow fight, Bobby heard laughter and looked into Melody’s room yawning a little bit and laughed, he grabbed a pillow and began to play with them. Melody saw Bobby and smacked him pretty hard with a pillow, hard laughter escaped her mouth and Bobby did the same thing.
After a few minutes everyone stopped and got dressed, when Katie went on ahead leaving Bobby and Melody she smiled looking at him. “Race you to the dinning room for breakfast.” She giggled and ran on downstairs dodging obstacles that lay in the path, and she got down there out of breath, Bobby followed shortly behind her and hugged her. She and Bobby sat down and waited for breakfast, Melody looked outside seeing the new morning sun, it brought warmth to her.
But that warmth made her remember her mother, she got up from the chair and she walked over to the window seeing her reflection for the first time, but as she saw her reflection she had flashbacks of her life. She remembered the time when they were happiest. In a beautiful log cabin home with a fresh fire burning in the fireplace, her mother rocking in a rocking chair holding her close and her father reading a book. But then another flash back came to Melody’s mind, a memory she thought she forgot.
In Melody’s mind her heart unlocked the true memory of her father, one particular night when Melody woke from a nightmare she heard screaming coming from downstairs she saw her father strike her mother hard in the face, causing her to fly back from the punch, he towered over her as she laid on her back looking up at him with fear, running her hand over the red spot on her face, Melody screamed both her parents hearing it looked at her.
“Melody run.” Fear in her mothers voice was heard and Melody ran locking the door behind her and hiding under the bed, sounds of a huge fight downstairs still echoed in her little head, and the front door slamming still brought chills to her.

“Melody are you ok?” Bobby wrapped his arms around her and that caused her to snap back to reality and she turned, she didn’t cry but now she understood what her father was all about, she hugged Bobby close and silently cried into his shoulder. He held her trying best to comfort her, after a few moments she managed to calm herself.
She went right outside and sat down in the tiny garden that was in the back of the house, she began to hum to herself as she tended the roses. She knew how to plant and take care of all kinds of flowers because her mother taught her everything when she was little, since her mother was a gardener. Mary came out watching her tend to the flowers that were in the garden, she let her be and watched the boys playing kickball, having a good time. Bobby was sitting on the porch and had a pretty thick book in his hand; he was the only kid in the house that liked to read. The thicker the book the better he thought.
Ignoring everything around him, his book took him to the world not known to anyone but the reader. His favorite book was Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. He had read it over and over again, wishing his life were somewhat like Tom’s. He got lost in his world not knowing that Melody was calling him, but she knew he was reading and lost to everyone around him so she let him be.
Little Melody decide to do what he was doing, so she went up into the small library that was in a room next to hers and she began to pick things and sat down with a few books. She looked at the book, but the words made no sense to her, she realized she couldn’t read and so she got up and went to find Mary. She found Mary in the kitchen and tugged on the hem of her dress, Mary looked down and smiled. “I want to learn how to read.” She waved the book she tried to read in front of Mary’s hand, she nodded and took Melody to a room, Mary was the orphanage’s teacher so she showed Melody the difference and meaning of words, Melody was a quick study and began to sound out the words and read. After a few weeks Melody was reading books, having fun doing so. She was in the backyard under the weeping willow tree that stood beautifully outside, her back against the tree and she had a book in her hand, Bobby came out and sat beside her.
“So what are you reading?” Bobby stared into her face smiling at her, as Melody picked up her head and looked at him showing him the front cover, it was Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Bobby’s eyes showed joy because he had read that book many times, she giggled looking at him. “I like this book, its good.” She smiled and went back to reading; Bobby stayed reading the chapters with her not minding she was slow at reading, lunch was brought out to them as they had a little picnic ignoring everyone around them. After a few hours she closed the book and smiled at him.
“So what are we going to do know, we could read another one but im tired” Bobby snapped his strong fingers and helped her up. Showing her to the back of the house where there was a clubhouse, he gave three knocks and the door opened. Bobby went in first and showed her a seat; there were three kids their playing cards, and they stopped looking at Bobby.

“What’s up captain?” One boy with blond hair in his eyes said with a laugh sitting next to Bobby looking at the girl, not sure what was going on Melody just looked down. She sighed silently and looked up at Bobby waiting to see why she was brought into the boy’s clubhouse.
“I wanted to introduce you to Melody, I want her to be able to join, because we like each other, she is a sweet girl guys she wont give us any trouble like the previous girls that have tried to join and have failed. Besides we share the same interests and even have somewhat of the same past and that makes us almost like brother and sister. “ Bobby smiled at Melody very gently, he hugged her and did treat her just like his baby sister, with love and comfort. Melody wasn’t sure what to say, but she knew the boys didn’t like it very much, but they didn’t fight about it, they just went with it.
“Bobby I hope you know what your getting into, I mean seriously this has been a boys clubs since you have gotten here and before that, its been a boys clubhouse for years and years. We wont be held responsible for what she could do, but we trust your judgment and so we allow her to join us with open arms but she is your responsibility not ours.” They all agreed to what the blond haired kid had said, and removed his blond hair from his face exposing beautiful blue eyes, he laughed kindly.
“The name is Dave.” He smiled shaking her hand kindly and he sat down knowing introductions would have to be made so Dave sat down and out of the way so the next boy could introduce himself. Dave was a sweet kid, he tried to seem mean but he wasn’t.
The next boy was the oldest of the boys he was 16 years old and yet to be played in a foster home. He was Native American and very handsome. He shook her hand kindly with a twinkle in his eye that he always had.
“Hello Melody my name is Sky and I hope you will be happy here, we have been at this orphanage for many years but me I have been here for 10 years and gets easier every year. But don’t let that bother you Melody im sure someone will come to take you home soon.” He sat down looking at her seeing Melody nodding to him and hugged him, not having a problem with anything, she noticed Sky had short black hair and brown eyes, he seemed to have dark emotions almost like there was nothing there, but she saw him for who he was, a kid hurting.
And lastly was a young kid called Zing he was a strange kid, always wore black, but he was a nice kid, he shook her hand not saying anything. It was said that Zing was mute and couldn’t speak. He hugged Melody and sat down besides her saying nothing. Melody had met some nice boys and she hopped to become fast friends, she looked over at Bobby but he just smiled and stood up, showing Melody around. There wasn’t anything-major just one room with a small table to sit at least six people, some cards and a few toys.
“We spend most of our time in here, away from everyone.” Bobby said kindly and patted the boys on the back with a laugh. In one end of the clubhouse were at least twenty books in alphabetical order. The books were very colorful because there were no book jackets to show any pictures just plan colors with the name of the book on the spine of it. Melody giggled gently and sat back down wondering what they did for fun, Sky came over with the deck of cards and shuffled them up and the boys sat around the table along with Melody.
“Melody do you know how to play go fish?” Sky said with a gentle smile, seeing that Melody shook her head yes, and sky dealt out the cards and put on some music. Mary had checked on the kids in the clubhouse and brought them some cookies, leaving them be. Giggles were heard which brought a smile to Mary and the other kids just ran around outside and inside.

As the day passed into the early evening Melody stopped talking to Bobby hearing a rumbling in the distance, Melody stood up and went outside. Looking up into the sky seeing the dark blue sky had turned black and then to gray. The wind started to blow her hair in the distance it was blowing, which gave her a chill. She smelt a storm coming and went back inside to tell the boys. They all nodded and ran inside for the night. As soon as Melody shut the front door lighting flashed across the sky and rain was heard tapping on the windows.
There was a lot of howling in the distance of the house, Melody went to go see what it was, but when she got into Katie’s room she noticed Katie was screaming at the top of her lungs. Melody held her close trying to be like a sister to her but she had no idea what was wrong with her.
“Katie what’s wrong?” Melody said in a whisper like fashion, so Katie could only be heard. She nodded at her crying hard into Melody’s shoulder and remained silent for a little bit, until Mary came in to see what was going on. But by the time Mary got in there Katie had calmed down and was silent. Katie looked at Melody with sorrow in her eyes, Melody knew something was wrong, so she waited silently for Katie to tell her what was wrong.
“Melody, today someone came here looking for a kid of their own and they picked me. It’s a young married couple but I don’t want to go and leave you, you’re like my big sister, and im afraid that they wont like me and I will wind up here again. I can’t stand to do this again, I have been in and out of foster homes for three years and I can’t take it any more.” Katie sighed and cried into the pillow once she was on the bed, Melody didn’t cry but she was upset, she looked at Katie with a smile. “Who knows Katie maybe these people will love you no matter what.” Melody hugged Katie and said goodnight to her.
Melody was upset and raced out of her room and into her own, she went to the window looking at her reflection for a second then looked farther then her reflection and saw the storm outside, it was almost like a battle between the rain and wind. Like the weather couldn’t make up its mind what it wanted to do. Melody looked seeing one star and she began to pray, but as she did Mary heard it and listened to Melody.
“I want to belong someplace, I want a mommy of my own and a daddy that will love me. I miss my family, but most of all I miss my mommy I want a warm touch to wake me up in the morning and because im here with no one in the world I no longer have that warmth to wake me up, I miss it.” Melody sighed and got into bed, Mary heard what Melody had said and it brought a tear to her face, she snuck away and went down to make sure the rest of the kids were in bed, since it was about 9P.M and well past there bedtime. But as 10P.M rolled around there was a knock on the door, Mary quietly opened up the door seeing a letter on the porch, and she picked it up shutting the door.

She noticed that it was a letter to little Melody; she opened it up and began to read it, which to made her Cry. Mary took the letter from the hospital and the letter she just got and snuck up into Melody’s room placing it beside her and left.
When Melody woke up she saw the two piece’s of mail for her, getting dressed she opened up the new letter and slowly made out what was written, she realized this letter was from her mother, but how she was dead, she read the following.
“My dear little girl, I guess if your reading this we are apart never to see each other again. Listen to me little one, I loved you more then life itself and I hope when you read this you can find some kind of peace. Now that im gone I am able to watch over you from up above and I have always been very proud of you. When I had you that was the most perfect moment of my life. I told the people that took you, that your father left us when I was four months pregnant, but that was a lie. I said that because I didn’t want to be charged with anything. I have a feeling you will end up figuring that out, you may have already remembered that night that your father left.
There wasn’t anything I could do, but now that you are being taken care of the way you should have been I can rest in peace. Because you were the only thing that I loved and cared about left in my life I don’t have to worry any more and my body has let me go. I love you so much my little girl, just remember Melody who ever takes you into there home, love them the same way you loved me. They aren’t a replacement of me but someone that will love and cherish you the same way I did. I maybe in heaven now but as for you just do what you’re told Melody I know you will; you have always been willing to learn and always respected those older then you. Just remember my last words Melody; I will always be with you, in that tiny heart of yours. All my love
Melody cried a little as she got dressed and she hid her letters so she could keep them a secret, deep down inside her there was warmth, a peace she hadn’t known for the longest time. So long she didn’t remember when she was happiest last. She hummed to herself wiping the tear from her face then washing it, she looked at her reflection in the mirror and smiled, she skipped down stairs and then got a little breakfast not talking to anyone but humming happily.
She had heard a car pull up and she peered her head looking out the window, she saw Katie putting some things in a red car, she got up and ran outside to see what was going on, she saw Bobby and stood beside him, Katie turned around and opened the passenger side door and noticed Melody, she ran to her and wrapped her arms around her.
“Oh Melody I hope your right about this, they say they wont take me back here, but in away I hope they do I don’t want to leave you. They say we can still hang out and talk to each other during each and every week. I hope they keep their word.” Katie smiled at Melody and handed her a piece of paper with their phone number and address. Katie got into the car and waved at Bobby and Melody, Both of them waved and soon the car was out of sight, the only thing Melody did was sigh.
Bobby laughed kindly right behind Melody knowing what Melody was going thru. “Its alright girl someone will be here for you to, me I have seen so many friends come and go, I can’t even count them.” She smiled and went to the clubhouse with Bobby and played some cards. But Melody was pretty calm but also very silent, she didn’t know how to react knowing that her first friend here had been adopted and no one even looked at her.

“Bobby how do you stand it? You say you have seen many come and go, you have had to have some people look at you, why haven’t they taken you home yet?” Melody looked at Bobby as he looked up at her kindly, he sighed not sure how to even start but she didn’t push, she was there to learn why Bobby never was placed in a home.
“Well Melody, some people come here looking for children younger then us, infants left on the door step, not wanted because of different reason’s. The reason why I was never placed was because im to old, I will end up growing up here with no parents, no loved one’s, nothing. I have been here 5 years and no one even cares. New parents come here looking for the youngest; some of us have medical issues new parents don’t want to take the time for. When im 18 I will have to move out, maybe there is someone out there for me, but I have a feeling I will end up watching you leave.” He looked down his eyes not weld with tears but you could see a deep sadness in him.
Melody wasn’t sure what to say, but she felt bad for what she said and asked, if she had known anything about Bobby she wouldn’t have said anything, but as she played cards she remembered what Mary said to her. She realized the new kids would be here any second, so she got up, hugged Bobby and waited on the porch for the social service lady that brings kids to the orphanage.
She hummed to herself pacing back and forth, until a big black care pulled out and the back doors opened as a pair of twins got out of the car, both with black hair, both the same height and weight. The only thing that made them different was the way they dressed and that one was a boy the other a girl. Melody came to get their things and put them in a room together. She looked at them, and sighed wondering if this was how Melody was when she came here.
“My name is Melody and I will help you get settled if you like, im still new here but I do know the place very well, I have been here a couple of weeks and the people and kids are nice here, what are your names?” Melody looked at them she couldn’t help but look at them with curiosity in her face.
“Im Joe and this is my sister Rose, she is rather shy but once she gets to know someone, that’s when she will open up more.” Joe laughed a little and hugged his sister, Melody nodded and helped them put there stuff up and out of the way, she left after a while and went back to her room to re read the letter from her mother.
She wondered if anyone would ever come for her, would she live the life that Bobby has, staying here till she turns 18 then have to find a job and a place to live? She didn’t want to have that kind of life she wanted a childhood. She heard the front door slam and heard a man’s voice, she went downstairs and realized he had a wife wanting a child of there own, she rushed and put on the sky blue dress that Mary had given her and went back downstairs.
“Mr. Evan’s, this his Melody she just came here from the hospital, her mother has died and left her alone in the world, but before Melody’s mother passed on Melody was brought here safe and sound. She was withdrawn but now she is talkative and loving.” Melody looked at him and curtsy best she could, the man nodded and patted her head. She smiled and took him by the hand showing him around, showing him the rooms and asking him a couple of questions. Her heart was beating fast hoping this was it.
The man went to speak with Mary going to the office and started writing out the paper work, Mary looked at the man having a feeling he had an idea of what child would be perfect for there home so she asked. “Ok Mr. Evan’s what child would you like to adopt?” It was a simple question but she needed to know so she could get the child’s file out, but neither one of the adults knew Melody snuck into the office and sat in the dark corner to listen in.
“Well I have been searching for someone between a certain age me and my wife had talked about, the only one that reached that was the one they call Sky.” The man looked at Mary and she nodded getting out Sky’s paper work, Melody realized he wanted nothing to do with her, tears fell down her face and she stormed out of the office knocking a vase off the shelf and causing it to break, which caused Mary to realize what had happened. She called Sky into the office and let the two get to know each other before going home. Mary heard crying and followed it into the garden, Melody’s blue dress dirty from the dirt on the ground.
“Im sorry Melody I guess it wasn’t meant to be, but you wont end up like Bobby I can guarantee that, your birthday is next week and we will celebrate it. Im sure the next couple will ask about you.” Mary held Melody trying to calm her, as this was happing Sky got his things and packed up his foster parents car with his stuff and said goodbye to Melody, she pulled away from Mary and ran into her room locking herself in. Mary sighed knowing it was hurting her, but what Melody didn’t know was Mary was a foster child to; she was in an orphanage until she was almost 15. With everything going on it was hard for everyone to understand, Mary cleaned up the place hoping that she wouldn’t be wrong about Melody, she hoped someone would come here asking about her, but there was a family already interested in Bobby, so she knew Bobby wouldn’t be around long.
