The Guardian of Time
Chapter 1: Visions of Nothing
There is a flash of bright light through the fog. A figure appears in the distance. As the figure draws near, the silhouette of a woman can be seen. Her features are clouded by the ever thickening haze. A faint call can be heard but all seems to be blocked by the fog. Before she disappears, a striking blue pierced through the cloud. The mysterious woman’s eyes shine like rays of light. Then, all fades away and all fades to black.
Kaya bolted straight up in bed clutching her locket. Her body was covered in perspiration but her locket felt strangely cool. She held it while she recounted what happened, “The fog was there again and so was the woman. It is all the same,” Kaya sighed in frustration. This dream had plagued her for months. It was always the same without any clarity. Suddenly, the new image in the dream flooded into Kaya’s mind. “I saw her eyes! I saw them!” she thought, trying not to yell in fear of waking the dormitory. Jumping out of bed at four in the morning, Kaya ran out of the girls sleeping quarters and down the hall to the boys. She knew that being in the boys’ dorm was going to result in punishment, but it was worth. Kaya just had to tell Will about the addition to her dream. He asked to keep him posted on any new developments. William neglected to note at what time would be appropriate for this information. “He should have told me not to wake him,” Kaya thought as a smirk settled on to her face.

Chapter 2: Hours Until Dusk
Bothering William while he slept or read were Kaya’s favorite past times. Things like this had gone on for as long as Kaya could remember. She had arrived at the orphanage as an infant. Abandoned on the stoop with only a note with her name on it and a locket around her neck, the nuns took her in. Not knowing her rightful birth date, Kaya was given the same date as another baby that had just arrived. William Goodsen was that baby. He was orphaned when both of his parents were in a fatal accident. Neither Kaya nor Will had any family, so they became each others family. During their childhood, the two were inseparable. As they matured, their lives took different paths but remained similar. William turned into dashing young man of whom the ladies often chased. He was smart but rather shy. Kaya, on the other hand, could get the attention of any room with her dynamic personality. Despite her modest remarks, she was attractive. Although not nearly as smart as William, the two still seemed to go together like peas in a pod. They new everything about each other, right down to the other’s favorite brand of socks. But their was one thing Kaya kept as her own secret. Something that not even she could explain. Something not quite of this world.
“Will! Wake up! Come on, William! Get up!” Kaya found his bed and was trying in vain to retrieve Will from his slumber. It was a loss cause to try to raise a seventeen year old boy from bed before dawn. Just before losing hope, Kaya tried one more thing. “I could use the Thought,” she said to herself, “it has to work.” The Thought is what Kaya called her secret. A few months earlier, just a short time after she started having the dream, Kaya discovered she could move things with her mind. It started off little. She would stop a pencil from rolling off her desk or hit the snooze on her alarm without getting out of bed. Now, she would secretly practice suspending a ball in mid-air or shutting a door from across the room. Standing beside Will’s bunk bed, Kaya closed her eyes and cleared her mind. When a light flashed in her head, she knew it was time. “Wake up!” Kaya screamed in her mind. Her first time attempting the use the Thought on something living was a success. William was startled awake; but so was the rest of the boys’ dormitory. “Kaya, what are you doing here!?” a voice from the top bed floated down. “Go back to sleep, Jacob!” Kaya whispered back. “No, I won’t go back to sleep. This is the second time this week you have come in here before hours. What’s the deal?” Jacob inquired. “That would be for me to know and for you not to find out! That’s what! Go back to sleep!” she replied harshly. Jacob was also friends with Kaya and Will. No one knew why he was at the orphanage and no one asked. He just arrived one day when Kaya and William were six and Jacob was five. “Kaya, what do you want?” asked William in a groggy voice. “It’s the dream,” she replied, “I saw the women’s eyes. That must mean I am getting close.” Will was trying to be patient. “Kaya, I love you to death but I can’t help but think you’re a little crazy. I think the dream is interesting too, but I would not go as far to say that it is a sign or something. Can you even answer to what you think you are getting close to?” This question stumped Kaya. She had not thought of what the dream was leading to; only that it was leading up to something. The conversation continued on in a similar manor. William was determined to prove to Kaya that her dream was just that and nothing more. She went on to tell him about how she was sure the dream meant something. They only paused to the rising of the sun and the needing to get ready for school. The thought of the dream refused to leave Kaya’s mind that day. The school day passed painstakingly slow. It was only at lunch that Kaya felt as though time was moving at a normal speed. Sitting down at a table with Will, Jacob, and a few other friends, Kaya allowed her mind to drift. What would tonight be like? She must have had a blank stare on her face because William asked what was wrong. “Oh, it’s nothing. I was just thinking,” Kaya replied. “You were thinking about your dream, were you not?” said Jacob. “No!” Kaya snapped. Then the realization set in. “Jacob! You were eavesdropping on me and William!” Kaya exclaimed. “Sorry, but it is hard to sleep with the two of you mumbling all the time,” he defended. “Jay, there are things called earplugs. Invest in a pair,” suggested Will. With that, lunch break was over and it was time for Kaya to go the chemistry.

Chapter 3: Day’s End
While listening to her teacher drone on about formulas, Kaya played with her locket. It had always been a mystery of what was inside. Ever since she was little, Kaya had always wanted to open the locket which was the only clue to her past. Using every tool known to man to try to pry open the tiny doors, she still was not successful in opening it. Many hours were spent solely on thinking of what this little treasure chest was hiding inside. Just like every other failed attempt, Kaya could not open the doors to the necklace while sitting in class. “What could be so important that it should be sealed so tightly away?” The questioned always lingered in the back of her mind.
After what seemed like an eternity, the dismissal bell rang. Kaya literally ran home to the orphanage. She did her homework as quick as possible. Barely talking in the mess hall during dinner, Kaya could think of nothing but going to bed. She only paused to say good night to William. “Tonight is the night. I am sure I will finally see the mystery women. I am also sure I will be telling you what happened bright and early in the morning,” Kaya whispered into his ear with a smile. “What have a ever done to you?! Waking me up early on a Saturday morning is down right mean,” Will joked, “But Kaya, please remember that it is just a dream and nothing more.” The conversation ended as the dreamer walked off to bed. She knew something was special about tonight no matter what William said. Shortly after climbing into bed, despite her anxiousness, Kaya slipped into a deep sleep. Actually, it really could not be called that. It was far more than sleep. What happened to Kaya when her head touched her pillow was more than any mortal will ever know. What happened to her was mystical.

Chapter 4: The Awakening
With a flash of bright light, the fog began to come into focus. The woman in the distance began to walk nearer and the faded voice was calling out. Everything was the same but something still felt different. Kaya looked around and could not understand what felt so peculiar. That was it! Kaya was looking around! It was then that she realized she was in the dream! Looking down at her feet, Kaya could only see the low cloud. Raising her glance, she saw the mystery woman was closer than ever before. “Phosa, I command you to lift this horrid fog or you shall suffer my wrath!” the always distant voice commanded. The fog pulled away as though being sucked into a vacuum. Instantly, all was clear. Lush green grass covered gentle rolling hills for as far as Kaya could see. Above her, the sky was magnificent blue. Only a few wispy clouds remained after the fog had lifted. As her attention began to drift back down, Kaya saw a beautiful woman standing before her. She wore a stunning white gown which complimented her hair full of golden curls. The woman appeared to be in her early twenties but her eyes showed she was too wise to be so young. Her crystal blue eyes peered directly at Kaya. “Allow me to introduce myself,” said the fair maiden, “I am Dameel, Supreme Goddess of Light. I have been trying to contact you for many months’ but as you have seen,” she paused, “evil has been at work. My only son, Phosa, has been the cause for my delay. He is the Lord of the Sea and can control water in any form because he is an Ancient. Phosa has been trying to prevent me from telling you about your destiny.”
Kaya did not understand what exactly was going on. When Dameel spoke, she felt as light as air. Everything felt right and all cares seemed to leave her mind. Kaya did not allow the questions streaming through her mind to be said. Instead, she listened intently as Dameel began to speak again. She told Kaya about the Ancients as well as herself. “Ancients are people who are nearly immortal. They can live forever but are not powerful enough to escape death inflicted by others. On the other hand, myself and two others are older than all of the Ancients and are immortal and can only be killed by the most powerful magic. To your eyes Kaya, I may appear young. Your eyes fool you. I am older then time. A human life is only a grain of sand in the desert which is my span.
As Dameel was telling her tale, Kaya stared blankly. She couldn’t understand what was stopping the questions from falling from her mouth. It was as though a veil was over her mind. Words could pass in but not out. Kaya just listened to Dameel. Right now, that was all that mattered to her.
“Racid and Seri are my kin. They are the other immortals of which I spoke. We are not siblings; only just came to be at the same time. The three of us are known as the All Powerful Triad. We were created by the beings called Forshas. Even I know who or what they are. They are the makers of powers, life, and even time itself. The Forshas placed the Triad on earth to maintain the mortals. When the world was young, Racid the Emperor of Night, Seri the Guardian of Time, and I, the Supreme Goddess of Light, lived in harmony. As time passed, Racid began to give into the darkness of which he ruled over. He began to use his powers of fire and shadow to cause destruction upon mortals. Soon, Seri fled into solitude. With her, she took her power over time. I alone, with my powers of wind and light, have remained faithful to peace and all that is good. So passed the time of harmony and begun a time of war and hatred."
Dameel paused and looked almost mournful. It seemed to pain her to talk about times of such happiness. After a few moments, she composed herself and continued on with her story. “Soon after the Triad dispersed, new powers began to appear in mortals. They were the powers of life, water, and enchantment. Many years ago, I wished for a son. He came to be and I named him Phosa. He was given domain over the sea. Later in his life when he was still young, he was turned against me by Malafist, Racid’s son. Malafist was born to a mortal mother and has never been seen. It is believed that he has his father’s powers as well as a few of his own. Not even the Forshas are sure of his strength.”
Dameel than told Kaya about someone very special. She told her about an Ancient named Chastia. The Ancient Goddess of Beauty and Justice, Chastia held the powers of life and enchantment. A simple prayer would allow her to heal herself and others who were good in nature and intention. The power of enchantment, on the other hand, was a mystery. None knew how to activate it or harness it. “Chastia was very beautiful. Her radiance was a true lure for mortal men. On a fair day, she chanced upon a man named Alexander. He was a strapping young man with a wonderful mind. The two fell in love and Xander, as Chastia called her him, soon discovered her powers. He did not leave and his affection did not fail. After years of bliss, Chastia bore Xander a daughter,” Dameel looked up, “You were that child, Kaya.”
