I have a very similar post in the Outer Senshi thread...How did the Sailor Scouts become the chosen ones to protect the Princess? I know how the 4 we know were reincarnations, but I'm talking like the very 1st set of Sailor Senshi. There's gotta be a beginning to them before they can be reincarnated, right? Maybe there's something I'm just missing...

Pplz have written fanfics about this, but I don't think it's ever explained in the manga/anime. One particular fanfic (which I'm reading and is not finished yet) explains how the Sailor Senshi is a group of chosen warriors that are to face threats head-on, while the planets can ready their armies to defend. However, these warriors were infamous for how fast they'd die (considering they take threats head-on, they really do take a risk). In this fanfic, a princess of each inner planet is given the powers and trained to use them in a relatively short time, before being sent off.

That sounds intriguing...
So there's really no true say in how they came to be?

I do believe that all the senshi are supposed to be the princesses of their home planets. Who better to defend the planet then royalty??

I know Mercury's palace was called the Mariner Palace (it was called after the Mariner, which first explored Mercury's surface). We all know Takeuchi-sama knew about the Mariner, but this is a flaw in the series (how did the Mercurians of the Silver Millennium know that the first space craft to explore their planet would be called Mariner?).

You have a good point there. But, seeing as "Marine" means "aquatic" and "sea", maybe they got it from there, and just added the "r" to the end. (RRRRR!)

I think SSM has a valid point. I don't know if you can so closely associate the NASA mission with the castle. Mariner is a person who lives and works with the sea. Perhaps Mercury was a water planet at some point in Naoko's planet history??

Some person call Ken Arrommdee wrote had a website full of info, and he said that Mercury was a water planet for Naoko or something. I dunno, but Yaten is speaking some sense.

Well um..we shouldn't look too deeply into this. I think Naoko just liked to work with words. But yeah I mean the connection between princess and becoming senshi doesn't really come up much. There is as been said a ton of fanfics written on it. Prequels are huge...but pretty much all we can do is guess.

Hmmz. No, the problem isn't Naoko Takeuchi's assumption that Mercury is a water planet. In Japanese, Mercury is translated to Suisei (where sui means water (same Kanji as mizu) and sei means star). However, in the western society, Mercury is named after the Roman god Mercury (or the Greek god Hermes), who was the messenger of the gods. He's often depicted with winged shoes and a winged helmet. Also, Hermes is the bearer of the Caducious (SP), which is a staff that is said to have healing powers (which may be the link to Ami-chan wanting to become a doctor 'n all). But Mercury was named after Hermes because of it's orbit: Hermes was the fastest god of Olympus and Mercury takes the shortest amount of time to go around the sun.
