Ami-chan's father went to America to become a famous painter/artist/somethin to do with paintings. Some sources claim him to have left when Ami was only 4 years old, but this is debatable.

I think the best explanation we get in the manga is that he's a travelling artist. He does send Ami post cards on her birthday.

In SuperS, Ami-chan gets a painting from her father. Eventually she draws strength from the memory of getting that picture.

Ami was born into a well-endowed family in the "rich" section of Juuban. Her penthouse apartment appears to be one of high-taste in an environment of professional workers. So, Amy began her life with a financial security and model influence. Her mother, Mizuno Sayuri in PGSM, was a physician working in an acclaimed hospital; her father was a talented painter and gifted in athletic skills. Together, they gave Ami a combination of factual intelligence and artistic knowledge to make her wise beyond her years. Well, things were not so perfect inside this "whited sepulchure." For reasons unknown, the Mizunos broke up, leaving Ami in the middle of a divorce settlement. Nevertheless, she remained with her mother. Life with mom was not all bad for the young child. She was well-nourished, clothed, and given as much freedom as a child could want! Because of her never-ending profession, Dr. Mizuno was unable to stay at home for very long and rarely had time to make for her daughter. it's not that she didn't love Ami or didn't want to be with her, but that she could only do so much to provide as a single-mother and keep a household. Ms. Mizuno, however, did make time to form some connection with Ami. In the SuperS Movie we see Ami's flashback of her mother baking her cookies as a symbol of her love and care for Ami; it's truly a kodak moment for the two ^_^. But still, these frequent incidents of isolation put much undeserved responsibility on the fatherless Ami. She was expected to maintain the cleanliness of the house, do her chores, and her homework as so as she got home. Mr. Mizuno gave Ami what he could in the time he had. As a master artist, he instructed her in expression and using her talents to their fullest - do what she can do, not what other want her to do. This lesson is reflected in Episode 170 when Ami fights against Nehelenia with Sailoruranus and uses her way of fighting to help defeat her. He also taught her the strategic game of chess (which eventually helped her in her career as a Sailor Soldier) and introduced her to the mystery of water with swimming lessons to keep her active and relaxed. This possibly attributes to her love of swimming to calm her nerves as she reveals in Episode 97. But I cannot neglect the fact that he did leave. Even with all his teachings, his absence left Ami without the deep influence of a man and thus a inability to relate with men so easily. She becomes too fearful, too unsure, to approach love, though she may dream of it. It's difficult for a child to know that someone who teaches you and brings you so much ends up hurting you in the end.

I'm not sure if they're officially divorced. In the manga, it sounds like he just walked out one day and never came back. Poor Ami seems to get really upset at the idea of her mom dating other men, though ._.
