Sailor Moon. When it comes right down to it, everything revolves around her. Every Season that I have seen comes down to her and the enemy. She's alone and outgunned, but through the power of love she will always pull through. This is the base of our story, the foundation of this side of our lives. All of us here at this site are drawn here by something that makes us different that sets us apart. Something that draws us to the show Sailor Moon. No matter how much you say you disslike her, even hate her. Inevitably it is her that draws people to this show, she is the hero... Although she doesn't always look like much of one does she? She cries, she runs, she hides, she screams, she's a ditz, she's the definition of a dumb blonde, she's constantly going rounds with her future daughter and her friend Raye. This is our hero, our shining example of purity and love. A little ditz who runs at the first sign of trouble. Not Even Close: That is the Serena of the surface. I have always said on this site, from the first day I got here and typed a massive 3 post essay on Sailor Mercury that there are two sides to every person. The Surface and the inside. The surface is what you see in a stranger and to many of you Serena is still a stranger. Her ditzyness, her crybabyness, the very things that make her a meatball head are all things of the surface. Dig past them. Shove them away. If you truly want to know a person you must throw away the surface and dig for the truth. This is my truth of the great women Serena, the great Hero Sailor Moon. Inside: There is no character in this anime that shows greater courage than Sailor Moon. Her constant battles, the number of times she has risked her own health, her soul, her very life for the people she loves are beginning to become to much to count. The best example of this self sacrifice is shown in the SuperS movie The Black Dream Hole a seen I know that you all know well where near the end Sailor Moon takes the hits for Sailor Mini Moon despite how much pain it odvisiouly gives her. Another example is in the R movie The Promise of the Rose where Sailor Moon would rather surrender than allow her friends to be hurt. TIME AND TIME AGAIN. She risks her own life to save others. She doesn't reserve this trait of her own exclusivly to her friends but she also extends her love to her eneimes as well, redeaming many of her foes despite odds that even the most desperite and stupid gamblers would ignore. Another side of her courage is shown in her dealing with her enimes. Could you imagine being in her shoes? Let's take one example, the battle against Queen Baryl. She stands up (at first) alone. No friends...they're all dead. No Darien...brainwashed... alone...she stands up to the women that destroyed her Mother's entire Kingdom in the past. She stands up to this powerful being and doesn't back down. Courage is a strong part of her inner life. Love: The source of her power. Serena's love for her family, her friends, and yes even her eneimes has gotten her into and out of some of the worst spots of her life. Her love for her family is best represented in Rini. It is one of the saddest realities of the Moonatic world that stout Sailor Moon lovers hate Mini Moon and stout Mini Moon lovers hate Sailor Moon; it is truly dissapointing. Even more than she loves Darien Serena loves Rini. She is her child, her daughter and although they fight and bicker all the time she still loves her so very much that she would fight for her and if nnessessary die for her too. Love doesn't come at any higher level. Rini means the world to Serena and although while she is around she may treat her as though she was her younger sister and boss her around the minute she is trouble Serena is suddenly transformed into the caring mother would would risk the very flames of hell for her child. I'm tired of the two camps. There characters love each other. Do the same. Her love for her friends is evident in almost every battle. No matter how scared she is, no matter how much she may want to run or break down in tears, the minute that her friends are in danger she finds the strengh from deep inside and fights as she never fought before to save them. er friends are her strengh. The four pillars that support the building of Serena's life. Without them she is powerless. At her side she is powerful. And when they are in danger...She is unstopable. She loves her friends and would sacrifice anything for them, even as we saw in The Promise of the Rose. Her very future as Sailor Moon. She would give it up gladly for their sakes, that is love. Darien needs no explanation, if her four friends support her house, Darien supports her soul, her very essance is wrapped around his man and as we saw in the first season when he was captured, Serena falls apart without him. They are destined for each other. He holds her up, but at the same time she also supports him. Without her Darien is a broken man and although he may tease her Darien is almost like a little child in some ways and relies, literaly needs Serena's love to survive. That kinda duality, that need for one another. That is passion. Love...an emotion with so much meaning that it is truly astounding that these four small letters can contain it. Courage, Love these two small divots that we have made into her soul. These intertwine themselves to make up a greater whole. Love and Courage, that is what Serena is to me. And I hope that is what she will always be to you too. Good Luck Creshosk!

Well. . .even though I feel you are going to beat me fairly and squarely I might as well post something. Even though I know you're going to win, it's not going to be due to my resigning from the competition.
To better understand the character, one might want to consider the creator, the mind that spawned Sailor Moon is of course Naoko Takeuchi.
Naoko Takeuchi (•“à’¼Žq Takeuchi Naoko), born March 15, 1967, is a manga artist who lives in Tokyo, Japan. She is the original creator of the famous manga/anime Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. Ms. Takeuchi is currently living in Tokyo with her husband, Yoshihiro Togashi, creator of YuYu Hakusho.
Ms. Takeuchi graduated from Kyoritsu Chemical University, where she received a degree in chemistry. Planning to become a pharmacist, her senior thesis was entitled "Heightened Effects of Thrombolytic Actions Due to Ultrasound."
Ms. Takeuchi's works are widely admired by anime/manga fans, and in the United States she is one of the most famous manga-ka, possibly the most famous.
Sailor Moon is the central character in Naoko Takeuchi's Most popular work by the same title. Tsukino Usagi (ŒŽ–삤‚³‚¬), also known as Sailor Moon, is the main and title character of the anime and manga Sailor Moon. In the English adaptations, she is known as Serena Tsukino. Due to the series' widespread broadcast in many countries, she is one of the most recognizable anime characters worldwide.
Usagi's name is a pun on the phrase "the rabbit of the moon" (ŒŽ‚Ì“e tsuki no usagi). This derives from a Japanese children's story about the rabbit that is said to be visible in the Moon's face, much like the Western Man in the Moon. (The manga translation gives her the nickname Bunny to partially preserve the pun.) Similarly, "Serena" is probably at least in part a play on the word Selene, a moon goddess in Greek mythology who fell in love with a shepherd named Endymion.
One day, as Usagi was running off to school, she saw some neighborhood kids abusing a cat, which she rescued. Afterwards, the cat (who could talk, and who was named Luna) gave her a magical device that allows her to transform into the "soldier for love and justice", known as Sailor Moon.
Usagi lives at home with her mother Tsukino Ikuko, her father Tsukino Kenji, and her brother Tsukino Shingo. These characters were named after the real-life family of the metaseries' creator, Naoko Takeuchi. She seems to be the only one of the main characters with a conventional nuclear family (Aino Minako possibly notwithstanding), as well as the only senshi with a sibling. She is a markedly poor student, and often comes off as dumb (especially in the anime), though largely due to naïveté and laziness rather than actual stupidity.
One of the biggest secrets about Sailor Moon is revealed in a number of connecting episodes in the end of the first series, when she realizes that she is Princess Serenity (the "crown princess" of the Silver Millennium) reborn. In the second series, Usagi learns that she will give birth to a daughter by Chiba Mamoru, and she will become a "sovereign of the Earth," known as Neo-Queen Serenity, by the 30th century.
In the live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Usagi is the only one of the Senshi to retain her anime hairstyle (albeit in a much-altered form; her hair is much shorter, only brushing the shoulders of her clothes when up and to the middle of her back when down) in conventional form.
Usagi is a typical 14 year old girl dealing with thingfs that every 14 year old has to. She attends Juuban Junior High school with Osaka born classmate Ōsaka Naru and Umino Gurio. (Molly and Melvin in the American Dub.)
Usagi fits into the typical Japanese beleif of blood types affecting personality, Type O Blood people are said to set the mood for a group and to take on the role of creating harmony among its members. Their image is one of taking it easy, of being peaceful and carefree. They are also thought to be big-hearted and benevolent, and they tend to spend money on others generously. O Types are generally "loved by all." But, they also, surprisingly, have a stubborn and strong-willed side, as well, and tend to secretly have their own opinions on things. On the other hand, they have the flexible, adaptable side of readily accepting new things. They are easily influenced by other people or by what they see on TV. They seem to appear level-headed and trustworthy, but they often slip and make big blunders inadvertently. But that is also the point that makes O Types lovable.
Usagi being a type O fits the bill perfectly.

ayayaya!! Both of them are too good for my vote! I barely had time to read them, they were so long. It'd take me probably six years to write half of that!!
But, if i had to give avote for the best it'd probably be Creshosk, but for the longest it would be hawk1 by far...
I hope my vote doesn't put any bad marks against my name....

Aargh how can one choose You both have such different points of view to offer, and both are fantastic. One is more from the heart, whereas the other is more from the mind, a more technically sound view... That being said... I vote for a third option... a tie ;D LOL!

Well, I'd like to point out that even though you two are of about the same level, your styles are different, and that makes it hard to compare them against each other. Both of the essays are very deep and very detailed.
Hawk1's essay on what Usagi's made of, would seem like an introduction on a complete coverage of her personality and what drives her. Of course, such a coverage doesn't exist, since Usagi will always have secrets and such.
Creshosk's essay is more of a why Usagi does what she does. A direct connection to her creator is made and shown.
I'm gonna have to go with Hawk1's essay though. Sorriz Cresh.

...wow. Now I wonder why I haven't been wearing a dunce cap all my life. XDD Back on topic. Both showed incredible depth and detail, and it was a very, very hard choice. It was like a battle of mental and emotional strength. Which is why I simply can't choose--right now. After a day or so, my vote will be placed. Hopefully. o.o;
