I prefer to call her Bunny, 'cause that is what I'm used to.

I just call her Usagi... that is her name, and I don't really like the dub names.
Really, if you went to another country and they called you something else because they were too ignorant to just use your real name, would you really like that?
Thus why I think using the Japanese names and terms is much more apropreate and also more respectful.
If I was going to call her anything else I'd probably use Bunny though since it is an actual translation. *nods*

I honestly just called her Usagi or Serena. I'm used to the dubb, but since I've seen the Live Action and the Japanese Stars, I'm always used to calling her Usagi.

In Dutch dub her name is also Bunny. And the name Tsukino Usagi really does mean Bunny of the Moon or Moon Bunny. In Japanese culture there's a legend of a bunny on the moon that bakes cakes (or at least bakes something, not sure). Besides that, Usagi has been designed to represent a bunny (try explaining the dumplings otherwise). Other than that, Princess Serenity represents Princess Kaguya, the princess that returned to the moon on her 16th bday in the legend in Japanese culture. Serena isn't the worst chosen name for the dub version of Usagi, but I think making up names just so they seem more american is retarded.

Yeah it is, but they were targeting younger children when they brought it to America. They would have not bothered watching if their names were that of 'Bunny' etc. They also chopped up the original Japanese versions something awful, so that just said to me cut in stone that they were trying to interest the younger children. They just wouldn't understand... I agree with you, I wish they had left it, but they didn't, and there isn't much we can change.

Changing their names so they look more american is like restricting the audience from seeing past the US borders. Kids watching the dub will think that Japan is still the communist country it was in WWII, like they've learned in history class, instead of the modern Mekka of entertainment.

Hate to break it to you they were targeting six and seven year olds, their history is called social studies and they only learn American history. And I believe that is in later grades. The age group they wished to show to reach were entering grades one and two, they don't know anything about Japan, they know of their worlds, and their families. I feel they should have just left it be, and target older children, but then I would proabably never have been exposed to it... I am Canadian, I thought that it was stupid, but you can't change what's already done.

Okay, my bad there. I never had much of an education in american history (or maybe I did, I never really paid attention in history class), and yes, they should have targeted a larger age group.

Well, I like Bunny alright, it's just that I think original names are much better for characters. I always liked the name Michelle for no particular reason. But when I heard there was a Michelle in SM, who's name was originally Michiru, I basically hated it. Michiru is a MUCH prettier name IMHO.

And the name Tsukino Usagi really does mean Bunny of the Moon or Moon Bunny. No, it doesn't. It's a japanese pun, meaning her name SOUNDS like "tsuki no usagi" which is "rabbit of the moon". However her name does NOT actually mean rabbit of the moon. Her family name is not written to mean it litterally. The no in her family name is the same as the ya in Seiya's name and it means "feild".

The 'no' in Tsukino means 'of', and Tsuki no Usagi means Bunny of the moon alright. Of course, you can't name a made up anime character Tsuki no Usagi, so they made it Tsukino Usagi. Basically, this doesn't matter, as it is pronounced the same way.
