Well, alrighty, I decided to watch a subtitled SM 'toon just now. It was Ami's First Love (I downloaded it somewhere). I can't give an honest opinion yet, because that's the first time I've watched a subtitled cartoon from beginning to end with the sound on, but I will say that I didn't like Artemis' voice. It just didn't suit him, and I think Ron Rubin's voice in the dub is alot better.

What was so bad is how much was changed and altered in the name of censoring something meant for Japanese teenage girls so that American elementary school students could watch it. This involved adding lingo that was quite irritating. For example, in "The Promise of the Rose" after Chibiusa revives Sailor Moon in the diner, as Sailor Moon is about to go back to the fight. Chibiusa tells her good luck. In the dubbed version of Sailor Moon Rini says "Go get em moon mama!" ... They also had to contend with the pitiful American attention spans and their inability to handle extended periods of silence and inactivity. Example once again comes from "The Promise Of The Rose" where after Sailor Moon crashes through the front window of the diner she is rendered unconcious and is laying inert. Chibiusa attempts to revive her and we ate treated to a scene where Chibiusa sits there. Nothing is said and there is no movement for quite some time before Usagi revives. Same scene in the dub we don't get silence. Instead we are treated to Rini whining and complaining about how she's treated. Entire episodes were dropped in the dub, and there is never any really good reason given. Some scenes are deleted, somce for no reason, others to censor what the American dubbing companies don't want us to see. Now note that there was never anything in the sub that did not at one time or does not currently also appear in American cartoons. Granted that some of the concepts appear in cartoons meant for mopre mature audiences, but again, Sailor Moon was intended for girls aged 13 and up, not american kids aged 4 and up. Some of the characters were altered from the concepts of who and what they were. for Example the character Zoicite was originally male, homophobic tendencies lead the dubbing companies to cast an obvious female voice actress into the role. and dialouge was altered to refer to him as a female. The characters Haruka and Michiru two lesbian lovers in the dub appear as Amara and Michelle . . cousins. Amusingly enough there was such a zeal to hide the true nature of these two that we are treated to some chronological errors of Sailor Moon knowing more than she should. This is only the iceberg of what was wrong with the dub.

Being a caring and concerned parent, would you want someone else to decide for you what your children see? We have the conservatives to thank for the dub changes.

I don't think the dub is inherently inferior to the original. It's just intended for a different audience. It's an adaptation. The story is often changed, sometimes things are taken out, and sometimes things are added. Often it is watered down and less exciting, but there are some good things too. I actually think the dub's music is better at times. (The scene where the silver crystal appears, for example.) And honestly, I don't think the changes from japanese to dub were any more drastic than those from manga to anime. Toei changed Sailor Moon just as much as DiC did, for better or for worse. Not so long ago, I was a snippy sub-watching elitist who thought that all things American were inherently evil. Nowadays, I still like the original better, but I'll admit that the dub has its good points. After all, as much as we otaku don't want to admit it, America's culture is different from Japan's. Most grade schoolers aren't looking for cultural immersion, they're looking for entertainment, and for a 12 year old's purposes the dub provides that just as well as the original. That said, if I had a choice, personally I'd pick sub over dub any day

I dislike the dubbed version a lot. The basic reason is that they took a good anime and tore it apart, making it a kids' show. They took out episodes because of 'questionable content', gave the characters sucky names that don't mean a darn thing when the normal names were perfect, they gave the characters whiny voices (especially Serena, ugh), they took out the general culture and replaced it with the Western culture, and I could go on. Totally Agree. Serena's Voice changed too much throughout the season too. I didn't like the whiny voice either. Why couldn't they keep the names? They weren't mean or represent anything bad. They do have an uncut version in English though, and we can be thankful for that! (Though it still is the same voices/names )
