Serena sighed. She was lying on a hot American beach, sunbathing while her classmates were probably wrapping up a chemistry lesson.
"It just feels so wonderful to be alone for a change," Serena thought.
She heard some people yelling happily in the distance. Serena cracked an eye open and saw a young man surfing. "Scratch that, it's great to see a cute guy without a shirt on," Serena thought, a smile on her face as she closed her eye again.
Serena awakened and jumped in her seat. Her chemistry teacher was standing over her with a yardstick in her hand, which was pressed firmly against the folding desk table.
"Daydreaming, Serena? Not very good of you to sleep through the first hour of your first day of high school, it shows bad judgment and lazy intentions. One more snore out of you, and we'll see if it doesn't land you in detention," the teacher said smartly, her eyes ablaze.
"Now, Serena, tell me what I would get if I added an ounce of water to an ounce of pure sodium."
Serena thought hard, but nothing came.
"Do any other students know? I want to see some hands in the air," the teacher said, adjusting her glasses.
Everyone but Serena had a hand in the air.
"I am going to contact the Headmistress and see if we can't turn you into a morning person, Serena Tsukino. I will suggest placing you in some athletic class for first hour."
The bell rang, and Serena grabbed her purse and went for the door.
"I'm not done with you yet!" the teacher's voice sang.
"She loves the mere thought of torturing me. I doubt I'll get a morning athletic class if the headmistress has a word in this..." Serena thought.
"Here you are, in your own little world again when a teacher calls you," the teacher fumed. Without warning, the Headmistress filled the doorway. When I say filled, I do mean that the Headmistress was wide enough. Somewhere under this slab of muscle and fat was some woman or other, but Serena seriously doubted this.
"Exchange student giving you trouble, Louise?" the slab blocking the doorway asked.
"She seems to know the English language well enough to speak it in her sleep," the teacher replied, flinching from the sound of her first name being mentioned.
"Sleep? I thought that her parents moved her here so she would learn."
"If we could just wake her up every morning... she could be among the brightest students with that imagination. A pity, really."
"I know what you want, Louise. You did the same before the school split and the boys packed. So, you want her in some form of athletics? I say we let her decide. She could choose a competitive sport, if you know what I mean. Toodles! Tell the girl about the sign-ups!" with a wink, the Headmistress disappeared as quickly as she had appeared.
"Serena, you'll either be in Physical Fitness or a competitive sport. If you want, I suggest cheerleading or drill team. All the other students seem to like that, since sport activities are always co-ed. Just go to the Main Hall to sign up for anything. If you're accepted into a morning course, talk to the headmistress and she will straighten out your schedule. Now, get to the next class," the chemistry teacher said.
Zane looked down on the approaching planet through the window on the floor of the vessel he was standing on.
"A green planet, filled with lives to conquer and bend to the Queen's will... She will be very pleased," he thought. Zane turned around, and the light caught his white hair and youthful face to be revealed to the guard present in the room.
"You have orders, Navigator?" the guard asked gruffly.
"I am leaving this room for the moment. This vessel is cloaked from the view of more mortal eyes for now. Keep your steady watch on that navigation tile," Zane replied.
"Yes, sir."

Amy looked intently into the microscope, but saw nothing.
"It's these horrible glasses again," she thought as she tossed her frames aside and looked into the microscope again. After some more adjustments, Amy had a good view of the virus sample that she was assigned to identify. She was a sophomore in the school, and the top in all the classes listed in her last report card, with an exception of physical fitness.
"Horribly thin... looks quite infectious to me. It must be fresh, they're still multiplying," Amy thought as she focused on two slowly splitting cells. After a few more seconds of judging the shape and size of the specimens, Amy ruled the little viruses out as E. Coli and placed her glasses carefully on the end of her nose. The boring yet interesting report was what Amy had been looking forward to since early that morning. Her hands were still itching to write it.
