According to the book 'Warriors of Legend', originally Naoko wanted the original Princess Serenity to kill herself after Endymion dies. I'm so glad that she tossed that idea. It would make no sense for someone who commited suicide to be reincarnated as a happy-go-lucky girl like Usagi. If there is reincarnation, suicide is probably awful karma!

And Japanese belief system have a different concept of suicide so bad karma maybe non-issue. As for "Warriors of Legend" it should be noted the book is unauthorized and not a 100% correct guide to SM canon. [ Zyppora ] Removed the spoiler. Don't wanna ruin the fun for anyone, now do we? Does the Princess kill herself in the live action version? I just don't think it fits with Usagi. Of all the senshi, she seems the happiest.

Okay, it makes sense that Serenity would kill herself after Endymion dies, but does it make sense that she'd be reincarnated as such a happy person?

*shrugs* Perhaps. I'm sure you've heard of the Kamikaze troops during WWII.

Were the Kamakaze troops all reborn into happy lives?

Considering reincarnation as their faith, they may have been. Can you show me that they were not?
To die for your country/family is an honorable choice. I think this line of thought actually dates back to the samurai.

*knows nothing about karma*
I'm not sure about the comparison with the kamikaze troops, since theirs was more a suicidal attack for a cause, while Princess Serenity's suicide was an irrational act of grief. Her suicide did nothing for her family or country. I think it was just a romantic Romeo-and-Juliet kind of thing. Though Usagi seems to be the happiest, she's also the most emotional and to some extent the most impulsive. I think it makes sense that she'd do something like that without stopping to think of the consequences.

When Galaxia shows Usagi that she stole Mamoru's star seed, she doesn't kill herself. I don't see her as the suicidal type, unless it meant saving the world. I see Usagi and the original Princess Serenity as two different people.

Usagi in Stars is a lot more mature than Usagi in season 1. She's probably less likely to lose her head by then. Also, at that point she still thought she could get Mamoru and the others back if she got their starseeds back, because of what Yaten said earlier about sailor crystals never disappearing. (Unless the anime version is different. @.@ ) I guess all I can say without spoiling it is... read the manga! ^_^
