I get the impression that Mamoru doesn't love Usagi just as herself. For instance, before they know they were lovers in a past life, they didn't like each other. Mamoru was really rude to Usagi for no good reason. And when he dumps her because of a dream, and doesn't explain, he is really cold. But then he finds out about Chibiusa, so he has an important reason to stay with Usagi, because he loves their future daughter so much. And then he takes off for America, when I'm sure he could've found an adequate college in Japan. Does he REALLY love her? Sometimes he seems really embarassed by her. They are opposites in lots of ways. Destiny, bleh. I like Chibiusa though, so I support this somewhat unrealistic ship. Just have to say that Seiya fell for Usagi just for who she was. Just had to add that.

I think a lot of these are common misconceptions about Mamoru. In the first season, he had several reasons for being rude to her. For starts, she's not exactly polite to him. She threw her trash in his face and didn't apologize, and frequently stuck her tongue out at him and called him names. (Besides, a lot of the things he makes fun of her for--getting bad grades and being a klutz, for example--are true, and her friends tease her about them too.) Later on he teases her because he likes her and wants to get her attention. If he didn't like her, he'd avoid her, not follow her around at every opportunity. And Usagi, for her part, purposely annoys him. Neither of them is willing to drop their pride and admit they like each other, which is why they keep up the teasing. Hence the first line of the theme song: "I'm sorry I'm not honest." The fact remains that he threw himself in the path of Zoisite's attack (or Kunzite's if you're going by the manga) to save her before he knew she was Princess Serenity.
Speaking of which, in the manga Princess Serenity seems to be just as immature and high-strung as Usagi, given her reaction to Venus in the flashback in volume 3. (Her expression, in fact, is quite similar to the face Usagi makes when she's mad at Mamoru after he teases her about her test.) Kunzite even comments that it must be tough dealing with her. But Endymion liked it then and he likes it now. The whole theme of the story is that Usagi and Mamoru fall in love no matter how many times they're reborn, not because they're bound by fate (it was fate that condemned them to die if they fell in love!) but because they're right for each other.
When he dumped her because of the dream, he wanted her to hate him so she could move on. If he kept being nice to her, she'd want to stay with him and he'd be putting her life at risk. Yes, his methods are insensitive, but his motives are not. It's obvious he still cares about her because he keeps showing up to save her. People seem to ignore the fact that it hurts Mamoru as much as it hurts Usagi. It's pretty evident when you watch his face behind the door in the episode where she goes to his apartment. Mamoru's mistake is not trusting her enough and not believing that they can change their fate. He's overprotective and pessimistic, but he never once stopped loving her. Also, he decides to stay with Usagi before he finds out Chibiusa is his daughter. They don't learn that until they go to the 30th century.
As for the college thing... Education is a very big deal in Japan. Most people don't even date while they're in high school, let alone base their college decision around their girlfriend. Considering Usagi's grades, she and Mamoru would probably not be able to go to the same school even if he remained in Japan, and she hasn't graduated yet anyway. In any case, it's not like he planned to completely lose contact with her. He's obviously going to miss her, since he spends the plane ride staring at her picture. He promised to write and call. It's not his fault he got killed mid-flight.
Usagi and Mamoru are opposites in a lot of ways. She's hyper, he's serious; she's often lazy, he's responsible; she's friendly, he's withdrawn... But their differences complement each other. They make up for what the other lacks rather than dragging each other down. And underneath it all they have a lot of similarities. They're both determined. They both feel a strong urge to protect those close to them. They're both secretive at times (which, to be honest, causes most of their problems.) They're both emotional, though she tends to show it more. Usagi says in SuperS that she's glad they have the same dream.
Might I add that Seiya's interest in Usagi was initially due to the fact that Usagi reminded her of Kakyuu. Yes, she comes to like Usagi, but it wasn't just love at first sight.

*cracks knuckles* Here we go I think a lot of these are common misconceptions about Mamoru. In the first season, he had several reasons for being rude to her. For starts, she's not exactly polite to him. She threw her trash in his face and didn't apologize, and frequently stuck her tongue out at him and called him names. Not sure if that's true for the anime actually. I thought they were traveling the elevator up the building to meet Zoicite and that's where Usagi showed him she was Sailor Moon. It's been awhile since I saw it though, so I could be wrong here, but I thought that after that Mamoru was carried off to the Dark Kingdom (to be brainwashed?). Besides that, in the anime the teasing seems to be more of a spontaneous and actually malicious thing (I didn't really get this impression in the Live Action though), rather than a craving for interaction. Would you like to give me a source or something for saying that fate condemned them to die if they fell in love? I don't consider them dying once because of an overjealous sage and unfortunate solar activity an 'act of fate', so to say. Besides that, the fact that they found each other again in the present tells us that fate had quite different plans for the two. Hmmz, overprotective? I actually got that impression from Tuxedo Kamen in the first saga. Avoiding someone doesn't really go in the category 'protective' if you ask me. Besides that, as you point out, it was wrong of him to not trust her. What makes me think of him as dumb, is the fact that trust is exactly what Usagi preaches, as well as teamwork and that love conquers all. Apparently he chose to trust the dream over Usagi, completely ignoring the fact that Usagi's judgement has been proven true more than once. In the Live Action, he also tried to make Usagi dislike him, but fails and eventually also admits to his feelings (and it nearly kills him). But there he didn't show any kind of hatred or that he didn't love her anymore. The bad vibe I'm getting from anime Mamoru, just isn't there for the Live Action Mamoru. I kind of felt bad when I found out that Mamoru had been taken by Galaxia. He never wrote, never called, and seems to want to have nothing to do with Usagi anymore throughout the saga. And we see Usagi and Seiya build up what looks like an exact copy of her relationship with Mamoru crammed in one saga, except (of course) the malicious stuff. She seems genuinely interested in her. Might I add that Seiya's interest in Usagi was initially due to the fact that Usagi reminded her of Kakyuu. Yes, she comes to like Usagi, but it wasn't just love at first sight. Ah, but was it love at first sight between her and Mamoru?

yumecosmos, I've read all these excuses time after time. They have some validity, but I stand by my opinions. I disagree that their differences complement each other. Research has shown that couples who share qualities are more likely to last. Zyppora, your remarks about Seiya are right on. He/she was never malicious, unlike Mamoru.

Mamoru died for Usagi when he knew she was Sailor Moon. He did not know she was the princess; no one did at that point.
References for the idea that fate was originally supposed to keep them apart: "Inhabitants of the Earth and the moon must not have contact with one another. That is God's law... I can't fall in love with you... But it's too late..." --Princess Serenity, act 9 "I had a bad feeling this would end in a sad love. A love that could not be joined together, between the Earth and the moon, different planets..." --Queen Serenity, act 12 "The destruction of the kingdom and the death of the Princess are not a curse! It was destiny!" --Neptune, act 41 (in reference to Nehellenia's claim that her curse destroyed the SilMil) "No matter how cruel fate is, I'll keep chasing you." --Sailor Star Song (granted, this might also be about Chibichibi and Galaxia)
Well I don't know about you guys, but I would rather be teased than forced to kiss someone when I didn't want to. -_-; (The anime may again be different on this plot point. In the manga Seiya knows what happened to Mamoru from the beginning, and kisses Usagi after the latter is crying because Seiya had to force her to remember it.) I'm not convinced that Mamoru just enjoys picking on her for no reason. You don't see him following any other girls around and teasing them, so I don't think it's just a hobby of his. And no, it wasn't love at first sight for Usagi and Mamoru, but Mamoru wasn't transferring his longing for someone else onto Usagi. Seiya expressed interest for Usagi much more quickly and readily because 1) Seiya is more confident and 2) Usagi reminded her of Kakyuu.
Usagi and Mamoru do have some things in common, as I said before. Anyway, it's not good to be too similar. Seiya and Haruka have a lot in common. That doesn't make them a good couple. On the flip side, Michiru and Haruka have very obvious personality differences, yet they're great together.
Yes, I do have to somehow bash SeiyaxHaruka in every Fighter-related thread I get my hands on ^^;

Mamoru died for Usagi when he knew she was Sailor Moon. He did not know she was the princess; no one did at that point. Ah, you mean Princess Serenity. In that case, you're right The question remains if that's a significant difference though. He knew she was Sailor Moon and she'd die if he hadn't jumped in front of the attack. As he says in the Live Action: 'I don't have powers like you', so he could have easily figured that saving her would up their chances of actually defeating the enemy, a goal they share. Besides that, as Tuxedo Kamen (not sure if by this point he knows about him being TK) he had been protecting Sailor Moon constantly. This could also have urged him to save her. References for the idea that fate was originally supposed to keep them apart: "Inhabitants of the Earth and the moon must not have contact with one another. That is God's law... I can't fall in love with you... But it's too late..." --Princess Serenity, act 9 Probably not God's law, but a law in the SilMil. As such, it's probably a precaution, not a law of fate. "I had a bad feeling this would end in a sad love. A love that could not be joined together, between the Earth and the moon, different planets..." --Queen Serenity, act 12 Bad feelings don't count as fate. Besides that, in the present, both are born on the same planet, nullifying this point. "The destruction of the kingdom and the death of the Princess are not a curse! It was destiny!"--Neptune, act 41 (in reference to Nehellenia's claim that her curse destroyed the SilMil) This could indicate something. "No matter how cruel fate is, I'll keep chasing you." --Sailor Star Song (granted, this might also be about Chibichibi and Galaxia)[/qoute] It's a song, so shouldn't hold too much significance. Besides that, it could represent a legion of things, such as the Starlights searching for Kakyuu, Seiya searching for Usagi, etc. Actually Mamoru was killed right in front of Usagi's eyes, and it's clear from the very beginning what happened to him. I'd like to think that my image of Mamoru would have been way different, had I read the manga before watching the anime, especially on this point. Besides that, I think Mamoru not picking on any other girls is a big indicator that it's a (personal?) grudge or Usagi being an easy target that gets him to do what he does. Some remarks are really painful. And at one point he even joins forces with Rei, picking on her together. It made me feel sad for Usagi. 1) Mamoru is pretty cocky 2) That's only the first (few) time(s), later on the Starlights start smelling olives wherever (wherever Chibichibi goes), and it becomes clear that Usagi is not Kakyuu, but Seiya's interest remains. I'd like to think of her reminding Seiya of Kakyuu as an attention drawer, and holds little indication towards her being Kakyuu, OR the Starlights mistaking her for their princess. Usagi and Mamoru do have some things in common, as I said before. Anyway, it's not good to be too similar. Seiya and Haruka have a lot in common. That doesn't make them a good couple. On the flip side, Michiru and Haruka have very obvious personality differences, yet they're great together. Haruka and Michiru have classic differences: Haruka is more masculine and assertive. But when it comes to the most important things, they think alike. For instance, I don't think there's a big intelligence gap between the two of them. They're also both pretty mature. And they are both very passionate about their mission. Anyways, yumecosmos, perhaps the manga makes Usagi and Mamoru's love more realistic than the anime does. It's true that in R he decided to stay with her before they knew about Chibiusa being their daughter, but maybe Chibiusa sealed the deal, preventing him from wanting to break it off in the future. Just a thought. Just the thought of a devil's advocate. I would also bash Haruka/Seiya. That's absurd.

The text from the first quote does say "God's law" or "the law of the gods" (gotta love those ambiguous plurals...) I got a pretty strong impression of relationships between Earth people and Moon people being forbidden. The whole point of their being reborn on the same planet was to get around that, which is what Queen Serenity goes on to say next.
Mamoru's arrogance is a false front. When he's alone, he spends a lot of time angsting about how he's not strong enough to protect Usagi. He doesn't even believe that he has the Golden Crystal because he thinks he doesn't have any power. And keep in mind that Rei also picks on Usagi, but Rei is Usagi's best friend.
I know there's no evidence that Seiya actually thought Usagi was Kakyuu. I'm fairly certain she knew she wasn't. But she did note the resemblance. All I was saying was, Seiya's love was not totally innocent, and the resemblance to Kakyuu probably caused her interest to develop a lot faster than it would have otherwise.
Maybe my perspective would be different as well if I had actually seen the anime. I've seen some of it, of course, but I read the manga first and that will always be my One Version to Rule Them All. <3
You would be shocked and amazed how popular Seiya x Haruka is on fanfiction.net and other fanfic sites. Never mind that they hate each other for most of the series. Never mind that Haruka is taken and Seiya has at least one other girl she's more interested in. Never mind that even if by some miracle they did fall in love Seiya would still have to go back to Kinmoku. Probably my least favorite fan pairing. >>; Outers x Starlights = disgruntled Yume.

I got a pretty strong impression of relationships between Earth people and Moon people being forbidden. The whole point of their being reborn on the same planet was to get around that, which is what Queen Serenity goes on to say next. Well yes, Shintoism, which was the mainstream religion in Japan until WWII, preaches about Kami (plural), so ambiguity can be expected in that department (not to mention the fact that, if I remember correctly, the Japanese language uses the context to define if a word is plural or not. You're gonna have to correct me on this). Earth people and Moon people being forbidden is still a law enforced as a measure of precaution. If they were forbidden by nature, by God/gods, or by fate, then that would mean there was no way for Earth and Moon people to meet up. But they did. The fact that they did shows that the law is at least not as tight and waterproof as it's being claimed (surely a God's law would be more perfect than to allow something like that). Mamoru's arrogance is a false front. When he's alone, he spends a lot of time angsting about how he's not strong enough to protect Usagi. He doesn't even believe that he has the Golden Crystal because he thinks he doesn't have any power. And keep in mind that Rei also picks on Usagi, but Rei is Usagi's best friend. Hmmz, when was that? First season anime? I do remember him being interested in the Senshi in the Live Action, but he never seems to actually worry over them (that is, until he's captured by the Dark Kingdom). I know there's no evidence that Seiya actually thought Usagi was Kakyuu. I'm fairly certain she knew she wasn't. But she did note the resemblance. All I was saying was, Seiya's love was not totally innocent, and the resemblance to Kakyuu probably caused her interest to develop a lot faster than it would have otherwise. Naturally, but that shouldn't be used against a possible relationship between them. In fact, I'm pretty sure you met your partner under certain circumstances that just happened to be there at the right place at the right time. You can't pick out something that could be read into in a different way and say it works against them because of that. Maybe my perspective would be different as well if I had actually seen the anime. I've seen some of it, of course, but I read the manga first and that will always be my One Version to Rule Them All. <3 Do you have the full series in manga? Ah okay, now I get it. Well, to be honest, I can see the points at which a possible relationship between Haruka and Seiya could work out, but they're few and far between alright. Besides that, being a Haruka-Michiru shipper I'd kick Seiya over to Usagi anyday. Heh, I have it all worked out: - Usagi-Seiya - Haruka-Michiru - Ami-Makoto - Minako-Rei - Chibi-Usa-Hotaru (arn't they a bit young though?) - Taiki-Yaten (these are the leftovers ) - Setsuna ... Mamoru? ^_^;;

I'm not saying that Usagi reminding Seiya of Kakyuu rules out the relationship in itself, but it might be the reason Seiya is more open with Usagi at first. I don't think that should count against Mamoru. And I don't think there's any evidence to indicate that Tux saved Moon because he thought she was a better fighter. If that was his motivation, why did he tell her to stay out of the battle before? And why would he be trying to get the crystals away from her? She was essentially his rival for the nijizuishou for most of the series, even if they did have a common enemy. Yes, I do have the entire set of the original tankoban, as well as 2 volumes of the reprint <3 I have lost the cover to my volume 18 though ;.; Ack! Sorry but I also hate ChibiusaxHotaru >>; *is a violent UsaHelios shipper* Nah, if we're gonna screw up the canon pairings it oughta go like this: - Haruka x Makoto - Michiru x Rei - Setsuna x Ami - Minako x Usagi - Seiya x Hotaru - Chibiusa x Mamoru Or maybe this (only slightly more believable) alternative: - Haruka x Michiru - Makoto x Rei - Minako x Ami - Chibiusa x Setsuna - Mamoru x Kunzite - Seiya x Kakyuu - Usagi x Luna (come on, you know it's hot) - And my all time favorite crack pairing, Hotaru x Perle! Haruka/Michiru must live! I also love Chibiusa/Helios, but if Chibiusa were to be with a girl, it would have to be Hotaru! This might be interesting, because my preference is women, but I don't tend to pair the senshi with each other, other than Haruka/Michiru, of course. I guess I don't see the others as being gay, unless you count Seiya is being purely female. Nothing wrong with fantasies though, of course.

Helios isn't really a horse >>; In the manga, the horse turns out to be more of his familiar than his other form, because in the end he summons the horse and rides away on it. Maybe the anime is different again.
Well ok, Mako x Haruka only really works as an unrequited love kind of thing. But Makoto did seem to be crushing on Haruka for a while. Then again, so was Minako... Anyway, in a world without Michiru I think Makoto and Haruka could work, especially when Makoto gets older and the age difference isn't so obvious. The difference between Makoto and Seiya is that Mako has more of a feminine, nourishing side, and she's a little more down-to-earth. But yeah, reality check... Haruka would never give Makoto a chance cause she'd look down on her too much.
PGSM Rei is pretty close to manga Rei, but from what I've seen PGSM Makoto seems very different from anime/manga Makoto. I'm not sure about them, but I think their anime or manga incarnations could make a cute couple. Ami and Rei? I'm not really seeing that one...
Ami x Chibiusa! There, see, there is something worse than Ami x Minako.
I think under the surface, Ami and Minako have a lot in common. They're both generally nice and caring people, they're both under a lot of pressure to be the best (Mina as a senshi and Ami in her studies), and they both tend to hide their insecurities behind a smile. I know this does not necessarily make them compatible as lovers. But there are less qualified ships out there. ^^;
Ok ok... Usagi x Luna and Minako x Artemis! How's that? Come on, you know Artemis has always had a thing for Mina.

Maybe the anime is different again. In the anime he's a horse/pegasus almost the whole season, until the last (few) ep(s), where he changes into his human form and hands the Golden Crystal to Mamoru (I think that's how it went). Well ok, Mako x Haruka only really works as an unrequited love kind of thing. But Makoto did seem to be crushing on Haruka for a while. Then again, so was Minako... Haruka would never give Makoto a chance cause she'd look down on her too much. You're forgetting that Makoto packs a punch. She got kicked out of school several times because of her fighting. I think putting Haruka and Makoto together in one room would be much like Schrodinger's Cat experiment: at one point, one of them will become a smear on the wall But yea, AU-wise I guess it could work, if you think of the feminine side of Makoto. PGSM Rei is pretty close to manga Rei, but from what I've seen PGSM Makoto seems very different from anime/manga Makoto. I'm not sure about them, but I think their anime or manga incarnations could make a cute couple. Ami and Rei? I'm not really seeing that one... She's not the tough bitch from the anime that everyone fears (although in the beginning the students do move out of her way when she walks through the hallway). She's quite friendly and seems to have twice as much control over her anger. At one point in the LA, Rei claims they should become stronger individually, and Makoto claims that it's good to be able to rely on friends (it has to do with Usagi not being able to prioritize her homework over a contest ^_^ gotta love that 'Kupi' sound that Rei makes later on! A must see!) Ami x Chibiusa! There, see, there is something worse than Ami x Minako. I'm gonna be sick ... I think under the surface, Ami and Minako have a lot in common. They're both generally nice and caring people, they're both under a lot of pressure to be the best (Mina as a senshi and Ami in her studies), and they both tend to hide their insecurities behind a smile. I know this does not necessarily make them compatible as lovers. But there are less qualified ships out there. ^^; I guess that's true. I just never saw them together because there's better fish in the sea ^_^ Pairings that make more sense for Ami. Ok ok... Usagi x Luna and Minako x Artemis! How's that? Come on, you know Artemis has always had a thing for Mina. You know ... that actually reminds me of an H-doujin I once read, where Artemis is being transformed into his human form (it goes without saying that the feline form gets 'experimented' with as well though)...

I get the impression that Mamoru doesn't love Usagi just as herself. For instance, before they know they were lovers in a past life, they didn't like each other. Mamoru was really rude to Usagi for no good reason. I would have to agree with Neko on that as I am sure that many of you feel too. I get that impression too myself about Mamoru. On there dates at times. I treats her more like a child than a girl friend. It is almost like the relationship between that of brother and sister at best.
