Just adding to what was said above; In Greek mythology "Endymion was a handsome young shepherd" and was loved by the goddess of the moon, Selene, or in our case, "Serena". Maybe Takeuchi had this in mind while writing the manga.

I know that Nako Takeuchi *had* to change the manga from the show for some reason...I think it was the producers of the show who made her do it or something.Want to know something else? She dosen't even do the drawings for the show. That sucks

Takeuchi-sensei and the director of the anime has some problems with each other. What the director wanted... was not what Naoko wanted, especially when it came to the Starlights, no?
As for the anime/manga thing... the manga came first, correct? Someone correct me if I'm wrong! Please! And then the anime... which was not much like the manga.
All I know was that there was some differences between Naoko and the director.
