Ever heard of 'tough love'? Iirc, at the end of 139 the woman shows that she's been taking on the kid like that because she wanted him to become stronger.
And yes, 67 was pretty lame. Same with the one episode where they enter the haunted mansion.

The kid was a girl, and there's no excuse to hurt your child. And yes, the haunted mansion episode sucked.

There's a difference between hurting a kid and hurting a kid. Motive and manner are quite important aspects to take into account. I wouldn't have minded my father taking me on if it would have made me stronger (I'm not talking about abusive stuff, but rather the whole sparring thing, hurting a bit but not too much). The important thing is that you learn from it, and that it's not abusive.
Case: my kids will be taught self defense. If I have to, I'll do it myself. They're gonna have to learn what it's like anyway. And sometimes that means getting hurt. But that's not getting hurt in a bad way.
