As far as I know, he left Ami's mother and Ami when she was 4 (or 5) and went overseas (I thought he went to the US) to become a succesful painter. In one of the episodes, Ami receives a painting and a letter from him.

From what I can tell Ami's Mother and Father seperated on pretty good terms but in the ongoing traditions of Sailor Moon they don't give us much information on anyone but Usagi's family. Her father is an Artist as Zyppora told you and he is only mentioned sparringly in the one episode where Ami get's the Power Mercury Aqua Rapsody. (Still havn't seen SuperS Saga in Sub though I got it for my B-Day in Oct been too busy)
Hope this all clears things up for you at least a little.

Hmm.... it might be leading back to the girl power thing as mentioned in another thread... it could be that they are trying to keep out the major male rolls (besides Usagi's earth father) to keep from focusing on a back plot... maybe... possibly.... >.<

Maybe...but my belief (and its just my theory) is that as time went on there were just too many storylines to cope with them all and still have time for the main theme to get through. Ami's father was not the only storyline to be touched on so lightly. There are numerous storylines which either get very minor recognition or fade away as the sagas work their course.
A few examples: Usagi's family pretty much dissapears by Sailor Moon S. Naru her former best friend gets about one episode per Saga after Sailor Moon R.
These are two groups of characters that were vital to the earlier sagas that simply dissapeared as they were no longer useful to the storyline. They pop up occasionaly, Hawkseye hitting on Usagi's mom for example. But for the most part they are gone.
Sailor Moon is just such a huge story that in my opinion it is unable to even tell the whole of itself. That's my theory.

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me back...school is seriously busy but I'm still working hard. A piece of advice about friends when you move from someone who has done it enough times to write a docterate paper on it. Pick your vey best lifelong friends and stay in contact with them and then slowly let the rest fade away. You are no longer an active ongoing part of their lives. That is simply reality as sad as it is. Whatever happens good luck to you.
