Sarena/Sailor Moon
Approaching the topic of Sarena is alot harder for me then the topic of Amy. To begin with I'm not deseritly in love with Sarena. ;D This means I have not been quite as obsessed with her as I have been with Amy. However I feel that Sarena isn't quite being raised to the pedestal she deserves. She is constantly refered to in the shadow of another. Sarena is not only another unique individual like Amy. There's something more... noble in Sarena.
If you were to watch a single episode of Sailor Moon it would be extremly easy to catagorize the Scouts into Sterotypes.
Sarena: Dumb Blonde
Amy:Nerd
Raye: (hmm... just started thinking, Raye might actualy not fit into an easy sterotype...hmmm...mabye...no...hmmmm... this deserves further study...later)
Lita:Tomboy/Housewife (interesting conflict there)
Mina: Dumb Blonde
All of the Scouts have an outer shell that hides their true personality. Its not easy but you have to crack through the shell to reach the true person inside. You really have to take the time and truely study the person.
On the outside Sarena looks like your average ditz. She's clumsy, she not the sharpest tool in the shed, she can be a total crybabey at times. Every once in a while she shows a streak of cowardice. (Although she's getting better) I believe it was the second episode of the first season when she ran and hid in a bathroom from the yoma. On top of that she doesn't apear to be leadership material. Not only does she not try to insipre her fellow Scouts, she is constantly in the center of every argument and every feud in the group. It sometimes seems like she's trying to pull them apart instead to put them togather. In the middle of battle she feaks out and normally can think straight relaying on Tuxedo Mask and Amy for stragety.
Well...needless to say if I were to stop this post here I would have just condemmed Sarena. I think I was rather harsh don't you?
'Well you've done it now hawk! How do you execpt to prove that Sarena has value now!?!'
(Raises hands to defend himself from the onslaught) Calm down people! We're only halfway done. Like I said, that's Sarena on the Surface. Lets brake out the shovels and start digging for the ultimate prize.
Sarena's Soul
As we start our dig the first thing we hit is Sarena's courage. Her ability to keep fighting in the most desperit of situations. Her willingness to sacrifice her own life for her friends and her daughter. Her ability to stand alone in front of the most evil monsters on the planet and not wet her pants and run off crying. Sarena has courage and her courage helps inspire the other Scouts onward in tough situations, to help them be the best they can be. That's an important trait in a leader.
Only slightly deeper then that we reach Sarena's moral backbone/fiber. Sarena has a very ridged set of morals and she clearly knows what's right from wrong and is unwilling to compromise. Her conversation with Amara and Michelle during the second episode of 'Birthday Blues' Is one of the best examples to her Morals in play. Her constant search for a way to save everyone even if it means risking herself is a noble and honorable goal and shows a side of Sarena that is overlooked by all who are not true moonatics. Probably the craziest part about her postion on sacrificing people is that she always seems to get away with it. When all is said an done everyone is still alive and except for some property damage ocasionaly none the worse for wear.
Still a little deeper we tap into the source of Sarena's power.
Love
Sarena's love is endless and she doesn't mind sharing with everyone. Even a hated enemy can become a friend if you give them a chance. Sarena's love for her friends makes her fight all the harder to protect them. Sarena's love for Darien keeps her refreshed and feeling alive. Sarena's love for Rini gives her a responsibilty that she's never felt before and her constant rebeling aginst this new feeling is one of the factors of friction between the two. However it is also their greatest bond. Sarena's love for her enemies can be called her greatest weakness, but also her greatest strengh. Although feeling empathy toward your enemy is frowned upon in combat it does give you the only hope of changing an enemies mind. The fact that this charactor trait/flaw hasn't gotten either Sarena or another one of the Scouts killed yet is a testement to their strengh. But it seems to work, a number of hated enemies have become friends. A number of bad guys have been redemed. I will not pass judgment of this trait, needless to save I am impressed at how well she has done in employing it.
We dig deeper and reach a solid metal sheild. Our shovels cannot dig through it. This is as far as we can go, beyond this point are the deepest secrets of Sarena's soul. It is a place I have never been to. Prehaps someday I will travel through this barrier, but not today.
As we reach the surface again on our way out of the tunnel take a look around at the arrogence, the crybabey... does it still look the same as it did before you went in? If the answer is yes then I have failed with this post.
Let me leave you know with this final message.
Never settle for the lazy first view of a person. Never be afraid to dig deeper and uncover their secrets. Each human being has many things to offer, if only you would seek them out.
